People of JUDE, I am thrilled to bring you news of the following:
| Quote: | The Public Diplomacy Division of the Government of India started a Nobel Laureate Lecture Series in 2007.
The first Nobel Laureate welcomed through this programme was Dr. John Nash, on whose life the film A Beautiful Mind was based.
This year Dr. Nadine Gordimer, who recieved the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1991, will be delivering the second Nobel Laureate lecture on November 10 at 1800hrs at the Town Hall in Kolkata. The title of her talk is 'The Inward Testimony'. |
It is a rare opportunity to meet a Nobel Laureate in such environments.
Also, it may be that many of us will not have the opportunity of meeting Dr. Nadine Gordimer (who is 85 years old) again.
I urge you to spread this notice like a plague. |

It was an embarrassment, as a citizen of Kolkata. The welcome given her and the question-answer session were ridiculous, to say the least. _________________ Yes, it was I who stole your shoes. |

For example, Pranab Mukherjee said, in a speech - "This togetherness has brought us... *pause* ... together".
I thought of putting that up in within quotes, but then Pranab Mukherjee doesn't exactly qualify as a JUDEan. _________________ Yes, it was I who stole your shoes. |

Then the question-answer session. One guy who was sitting right behind us asked some bizarre question on the lines of why literature in indigenous Indian languages isn't promoted/is not as popular in the country. For heaven's sake. How is Nadine Gordimer supposed to answer that?
And then another gentleman delivered a long speech, in the name of a question, on the political scenario in West Bengal.. three decades of Communist rule... all the intricacies and fallacies of it... what should be done to change it... etcetera etcetera etcetera. What does she have to say on that?
Oh and the session ended, much later than it was supposed to, with someone repeating "One prayer Ma'am, one prayer.. not a question... one prayer.." into the mike.
It's amazing that people don't find it embarrassing to make a fool of themselves in public. But then may be they don't realise as much. _________________ Yes, it was I who stole your shoes. |
